Canadian Law Firm to Merge with U.K.’s Wragge Lawrence Graham

By John Rossos

A Canadian law firm says it’s merging with a U.K. counterpart to create Gowling WLG, which will focus on a wide range of global sectors from offices in major cities around the world.

Toronto-based Gowlings and London-based Wragge Lawrence Graham & Co say they have complementary strengths and internal cultures.

The new firm will be launched in January, with more than 1,400 legal professionals – about half from each founding firm.

The combined companies will have offices in major European centres such as Paris, Brussels and Moscow, in Beijing and other Asian cities, in Dubai and in Ottawa and other Canadian cities from Montreal to Vancouver.

Gowlings chief executive Scott Jolliffe says Gowling WLG expects to add other like-minded firms over the next few years.

In an interview, BridgePoint Financial Services Inc. co-founder John Rossos says the Gowlings merger reaffirms the continued globalization of legal services.

“Law firms require scale to service global clients in an environment where national borders are becoming increasingly meaningless for the delivery of legal services,” he says. “Scale also enables law firms to invest in technology and attract topflight talent to increase the value of their service offering while enhancing the efficiency of how they deliver services to their clients.”

Rossos, who is both a chartered financial analyst and a member of the Ontario Bar, says BridgePoint’s expansion into Europe with the formation of SpectraLegal is a direct result of this global phenomenon.

“Law firms increasingly require capital to finance their expansion,” he says. “They need financing partners that understand their industry and the underlying risk and opportunity that they face in different markets at different times.”

BridgePoint Financial Services Inc. is the only company of its kind in Canada that offers a completely integrated service for law firms and their clients to ensure fair access to justice by providing unique financing solutions to support the specialized needs of plaintiffs, their lawyers and the experts who develop their legal claims.
