Howie, Sacks and Henry LLP

Toronto Personal Injury Lawyer

Kaitlyn MacDonell is a partner at Howie, Sacks & Henry LLP and a dedicated Toronto personal injury lawyer and disability advocate who brings both professional expertise and deeply personal motivation to every case she handles. The recipient of the Ontario Trial Lawyers Association’s 2021 Martin Wunder Q.C. Outstanding New Lawyer Award, Kaitlyn has built a practice centred on protecting the rights of accident victims, brain injury survivors, and individuals whose disability and insurance claims have been denied or delayed.

Called to the Ontario Bar: 2013

Kaitlyn’s practice is devoted to complex personal injury litigation, long-term disability claims, accident benefits disputes, and other disability and insurance litigation. She regularly attends trials, administrative hearings, and complex motions before the Superior Court of Justice, the Divisional Court, and Administrative Tribunals. Clients throughout Hamilton, the GTA, and across Ontario have relied on Kaitlyn’s thorough preparation, strategic thinking, and genuine commitment to their recovery.

What gives Kaitlyn a uniquely empathetic perspective on brain injury claims is personal experience: her father was diagnosed with an acquired brain injury following a serious assault, giving her first-hand knowledge of the devastating adjustments a family faces when a loved one suffers such an injury. This lived understanding has been the driving force behind her advocacy for injured victims and her longstanding commitment to the brain injury community.

An Award-Winning Young Leader in Personal Injury Law

In 2021, Kaitlyn was awarded the prestigious Martin Wunder Q.C. Outstanding New Lawyer Award by the Ontario Trial Lawyers Association – one of the most respected recognitions for emerging plaintiff-side lawyers in Ontario. She was also honoured by the Chief Justice of Ontario’s Advisory Committee on Professionalism with the 2012 Rueter Scargall Bennett LLP prize in legal ethics for her essay on the ethics of class counsel.

Kaitlyn is a published author on court practices, the past editor-in-chief of the OTLA Long Term Disability Section newsletter, and serves on the Practice Direction Committee of OTLA, where she voluntarily drafts important documents that shape policy and law for accident victims across Ontario. She has taught at the Osgoode MVA Law Certificate Course and spoken at the Ontario Bar Association, the Law Society of Ontario’s Motor Vehicle Litigation Summit, and Osgoode Hall Law School.

Kaitlyn is currently the President of the Brain Injury Association in the Peterborough Region and has served on its board for over ten years – reflecting a genuine and sustained commitment to supporting brain injury survivors and their families beyond her legal practice.
