Melissa Miller is a partner at Howie, Sacks & Henry LLP and a leading disability denial and nursing home negligence lawyer. Melissa is certified in Elder Law and concentrates her practice on nursing home negligence, long-term care cases, and elder abuse – areas where vulnerable people are often the least able to advocate for themselves and where the consequences of negligence can be fatal. Her broader personal injury practice also includes product liability, hospital negligence, car accidents, slip and fall claims, and long-term disability denials. She is a trial advocate with extensive experience in complex cases, and she goes all the way when that is what is needed to secure justice for her clients.

Melissa founded Canadians4LTC and Lawyers4LTC to advocate for systemic change to long-term care across Canada – organizations that have led demonstrations, engaged government, and given a collective voice to families devastated by the failures of a broken system. Her work was recognized by the National Film Board of Canada, which made her the subject of the documentary Stolen Time, focusing on systemic issues in long-term care. She has testified before the Parliamentary Justice Committee to advocate for changes to the Criminal Code to better protect seniors.

Melissa is one of Canada’s most prominent legal voices on long-term care and elder law. She has taught the Osgoode Certificate in Elder Law, chaired the OBA Elder Law Update, spoken before the Ontario Nurses’ Association, and lectured at Western Law on education and disability rights.
